Preparing to buy a new home? There are many factors to consider when selecting a neighborhood that is right for you.

Below are just a few of the many factors, but you may think of others that are important to you. Neighborhoods have characteristic personalities...investigate to determine if the neighborhood matches your personal lifestyle and preferences.

Scout the Neighborhood

It is important to scout the neighborhood in person. You will live in more than just your house!

o Talk to people who live there.

o Drive or walk through the area at different times of the day, during the week and on weekends.

o Travel to and from places that you would typically frequent to be sure you are comfortable.

o Look for access to major thoroughfares, highways, and shopping.

o Check with local civic, police, and school officials to find info about the area.

o Look at traffic patterns around the area during different times of the day and drive from the area to work.

o Confirm whether the neighborhood is near activities and areas that you enjoy.

Ask Helpful Questions

What kind of noise is nearby, created by commerce, roads, railways, or military/air activity? What is the adjacent commerce or agriculture like? Does the neighborhood belong in a Property Homeowners Association?
